"...absconde from thy servitude, and yon demons will heed your command. Sally forth, ye gods of men, ye keepers of silence, and shine your light upon the world."
Due to some errors in translation, this excerpt from an ancient bible seems rather, well, silly. Remember that demon, from daimon, is the greek word for "spirit" (as in ghost), and this document was originally translated into greek before the writing of the septaugint.

LOL I just made all that up!
no, actually i think it was along the lines of "summoning" and that "gods" were simply the way magic was taught; you matched this action or power with this god, so thats the mental picture you had when you "cast the spell" probably just the visual look of the cast spell, spawning stories of other beings like ghosts or gods. Mistranslate the words and definitions of "god" "ghost" or "magic" and you ruin the entire idea. Make gods something that control you, instead of spirits you summoned and controlled, or perhaps just a made up idea in the first place, and poof.
There goes magic. or knowledge of some kind. Seriously. Religions that are against information piss me off.
